Candle Making in NYC: Inside Vela The Candle Kitchen in Hell’s Kitchen

Updated: 3 days ago

A hands-on workshop in Manhattan where you create your own custom candle from scratch.

A new candlemaking studio has opened in Hell’s Kitchen, offering New Yorkers a chance to slow down and make something by hand. Located on West 46th Street, Vela The Candle Kitchen hosts guided workshops where guests learn the full candlemaking process, from melting wax to pouring and setting their own candle.

It’s designed for beginners, with no prior experience needed. The focus is less on customization shortcuts and more on understanding how a candle actually comes together.

At a Vela candlemaking class, workshops begin with choice. Guests select a fragrance and a candle jar from a range of scents and colors, then follow clear, step-by-step instructions as the candle takes shape. The pace is relaxed, with plenty of time to ask questions while the wax melts and cools.

Carolina Asensio, the Founder, says, "Vela started as a modern, hands-on ‘candle kitchen’ where guests choose their ingredients, blend a custom scent like a recipe, and make a candle from start to finish. The name Vela — Spanish for ‘candle’ - is a small nod to my roots." This philosophy shapes every class.

The studio itself feels calm and welcoming, styled in soft tones that make it easy to settle in and focus on the process rather than rushing to a finished product.

New York City has no shortage of DIY classes. But Vela is currently the only candlemaking studio in NYC offering a full melting-and-pouring experience in a guided group setting.

Participants work directly with melted wax, not pre-measured kits.

Each guest receives a recipe card, reinforcing the idea that candlemaking is like cooking. Ingredients matter. Measurements matter. Technique matters.

The space itself reflects that mindset. Soft lighting, calm tones, and an inviting layout make it feel less like a commercial class and more like a creative living room.

In addition to its classic scented candle workshop, Vela offers a few variations:

Wax melts workshops, where guests create small, scented melts to use with a burner, are included in the class. With lots of shapes and colors, this option feels playful and experimental.

Massage candle workshops, focused on skin-safe candles that melt into warm oil. Guests blend natural butters like shea or cocoa with nourishing oils such as coconut or jojoba, leaning into the self-care side of candlemaking.

Sand candle workshops for kids, a heat-free option where children layer colorful candle sand and add a wick. Each child leaves with a finished candle that they designed themselves. These classes launch on weekends in mid-February.

Vela’s workshops offer a quieter alternative to typical NYC plans. They’re social without being hectic and structured without feeling rigid, making them well-suited for birthdays, small celebrations, team outings, or casual meetups.

Everyone leaves with something they made themselves, which adds a lasting sense of satisfaction. It’s the kind of experience that works just as well for a relaxed date night as it does for a creative afternoon with friends.
