Vital Theatre Company brings the beloved book to life with heart, humor, and high-energy fun
If you’re searching for the best children’s theater in NYC, Pinkalicious The Musical continues to charm audiences with its colorful energy and meaningful message. Brought to life on stage by Stephen Sunderlin, Founding Artistic Director of Vital Theatre Company, this beloved adaptation transforms the popular children’s book into an interactive live theater experience families won’t forget.

“Pinkalicious The Musical is a joyful, high-energy story about a girl who loves the color pink a little too much, especially when it comes to pink cupcakes,” Sunderlin explains. After indulging in one too many treats, Pinkalicious wakes up with “Pinkititis,” turning pink from head to toe. What follows is a playful, heartfelt journey about balance, listening to parents, and discovering there’s more to life than just your favorite color.
So why does Pinkalicious The Musical resonate so deeply with kids?
“Pinkalicious is imaginative, expressive, and unapologetically herself, qualities kids really see in themselves,” says Sunderlin. “She makes mistakes, but they come from enthusiasm and passion, not bad intentions.” Children connect to her big personality and even bigger feelings, watching her learn and grow in a way that feels authentic and fun.
At its core, the show delivers an important lesson. “It’s about balance and self-control,” Sunderlin shares. “It gently reinforces that too much of even our favorite thing isn’t always the best choice, all delivered with humor and heart.”
Seeing Pinkalicious The Musical live is a completely different experience from reading the book. With vibrant costumes, catchy songs, energetic choreography, and audience participation, the stage production creates what Sunderlin calls “a shared memory rather than just a story on the page.”
And the audience reactions? Unforgettable.
“There’s always a collective gasp when Pinkalicious turns pink, followed by little voices shouting, ‘She’s pink!’” he laughs. When Pinkalicious asks the audience if she should eat “just one more cupcake,” half the crowd yells “YES!” while the other half warns “NO!” “It’s kind of like the Pinkalicious version of the Marshmallow Test,” Sunderlin says.
But his favorite moment happens in the park scene, when kids leap to help Mom and Dad spot Pinkalicious behind them. “By the third time, they’re practically standing on their seats, arms stretched out, calling as loudly as they can. It’s adorable. And watching parents laugh at their children’s wholehearted enthusiasm, that’s what makes me smile every time.”
More than anything, Sunderlin hopes families leave connected. “I hope they leave smiling, humming the songs, and talking about their favorite moments on the ride home. Live theater has a way of bringing families together, and that joy is what it’s all about.”
For NYC parents looking for meaningful family entertainment, Pinkalicious The Musical delivers laughter, life lessons, and plenty of pink.
