Inside NYC’s most creative cupcake brand turning custom desserts into luxury edible art
In New York City, joy often arrives in unexpected places. Sometimes it’s a great song playing from a passing car. Sometimes it’s a perfectly timed coffee. And sometimes, it’s a box of cupcakes so charming you can’t help but smile before you even take a bite.
That last kind of moment is exactly what Anney had in mind when she launched A Cuter Cupcake, a whimsical New York dessert brand that turns cupcakes into tiny works of edible design.

What makes the story even sweeter? The idea started as what Anney calls her “crazy dorm room dream” while studying at Parsons School of Design.
“I’ve always loved baking and had a passion for making sweet treats,” she says. During her senior year, students were asked to either collaborate with an existing company or design a product of their own. For Anney, the decision was obvious. “I’m an entrepreneur at heart, so I decided to design a curated, luxury cupcake business. A few pivots later, A Cuter Cupcake was born.”
But from the beginning, she wasn’t thinking about cupcakes the way most bakeries do.
Most people go to design school to create fashion, furniture, or branding. Anney went and ended up designing cupcakes. Her training at Parsons helped shape how she thinks about desserts as visual and emotional experiences.
“Since the beginning, I’ve always wanted to capture the feeling of joy that we get from eating a sweet treat,” she explains. “Being able to understand the fundamentals of design helped shape the initial cupcakes.” That design mindset shows up in every box. Instead of standard frosting swirls, A Cuter Cupcake creates playful miniature scenes and objects: tiny purses, adorable animals, ski slopes, and even New York icons like coffee cups and Broadway signs.
The cupcakes feel less like desserts and more like little gifts.
The idea for the business was also sparked by a surprisingly relatable New York moment. Anney once needed cupcakes for a party and decided to order them online. What arrived was… less than perfect. “Spoiler alert,” she shares. “They all arrived messed up.”
Instead of making things easier, the experience created stress. The cupcakes were damaged and she suddenly needed a last-minute solution.
That moment stuck with her.
“It was not a hassle-free process and added a ton of stress,” she says. “We wanted to offer convenience with easy hand delivery that would arrive on time.” In other words, cupcakes should solve problems, not create them.
Before officially launching, Anney did something many founders skip: she went straight to the source. She walked around New York asking people about their cupcake experiences. What worked? What didn’t?
“We learned a lot about how the experience of buying cupcakes could be more stress-free and convenient, but the most surprising feedback was that people found most cupcakes in the city to be way too sweet,” she says. “That was crucial feedback for our product development and helped us focus on flavor over sugar.”
Instead of overwhelming sweetness, A Cuter Cupcake focuses on balanced flavors designed specifically for New Yorkers. “Since we are a local business and not a nationwide chain, designing for the New York palate was essential,” she says. “New York is a fitness and wellness oriented city, so we wanted to create a treat with that in mind.”
The business started gaining attention quickly, almost faster than expected. In fact, the first orders arrived before the website was even finished.
“We accidentally left out some promo cards,” Anney says. “People started ordering before the site was even ready.”
That early excitement turned the dorm-room idea into something much bigger. Soon, luxury brands began taking notice. Today, A Cuter Cupcake has collaborated with companies like Miu Miu, Prada, and SoulCycle, brands known for style and design.
The connection actually makes perfect sense.
“We put quality first above everything,” Anney explains. “With luxury partnerships they want a brand that will represent them in a way that feels premium and authentic.”

The cupcakes have also appeared at events with institutions like New York University and the New York Historical Society, marking a major leap from dorm-room project to citywide favorite.
For Anney, baking has always been about more than food. Back in high school, it was something she did simply to make people feel better. “I used to bake to cheer myself up or spread joy to neighbors and friends,” she says. “A Cuter Cupcake felt like a natural extension of that.”
That spirit still defines the brand today. Many customers order cupcakes not just for celebrations but for everyday moments—birthdays, baby showers, thank-you gifts, or even a midweek pick-me-up.
And when the box finally opens?
“Joy, excitement and wonder,” Anney says. “That’s the feeling I hope people have before they even take the first bite.”
As a female and AAPI founder, Anney has also woven her identity into the brand. “Being a female founder, especially in the F&B industry, poses a lot of challenges that male founders don’t have to deal with,” she says. “Ultimately, I used my perspective as a way to craft a better product that connects with everyone but especially with women. I’ve also leaned into my roots with packs like our Lunar New Year Pack and Boba Tea Pack, which are super special to me.”
Despite the brand’s growth, the cupcakes remain handmade and detailed, something that makes them special but also tricky to ship. “Since the cupcakes are perishable and shipping carriers can be rough with packages, our focus remains NYC,” Anney says. For now, that means New Yorkers get the sweetest advantage.
Customers can even create their own custom box through a mix-and-match option, choosing four favorite designs to build a personalized cupcake pack.
It’s a simple idea, but in a city where everything moves fast, opening a box of playful, beautifully designed cupcakes feels like hitting pause for a moment. And that’s exactly the point. Because for Anney, A Cuter Cupcake isn’t just about dessert. It’s about giving New Yorkers something they rarely get enough of: a small, joyful surprise in the middle of a busy day.
