Gazillion Bubble Show Brings Family Magic to NYC

Updated: 3 days ago

The long-running Off-Broadway hit creating wonder for kids and parents

If you’re searching for unforgettable family-friendly shows in NYC, the Gazillion Bubble Show continues to top the list, and for good reason. This iconic Off-Broadway production has been dazzling audiences for nearly two decades with bubbles that swirl, stretch, spin, glow, and even surround the entire theater.

But the real magic? It started long before the curtain rises.

The Gazillion Bubble Show began with my father, Fan Yang, when he was still a child,” shares Melody Yang. He grew up in a poor village in Serbia, where he became fascinated by bubbles forming naturally in the river near his home. “That simple childhood wonder stayed with him.”

As he grew older and entered the world of circus arts and entertainment, he decided to create something entirely new, a show centered around soap bubbles. “To make that vision possible, he knew the bubbles had to do more than float,” Melody explains. “He needed a formula strong and versatile enough to create bubbles of every size and shape.” After years of experimentation, he developed the bubble solution that became the foundation of the show.

Around age 16 or 17, he met Melody’s mother, Ana Yang. Together with Melody’s uncle Jano, they began performing professionally in circuses, nightclubs, galas, and variety shows. “At first, it was a smaller act blending bubbles with acrobatics, magic, and comedy,” Melody says. “Over time, my father began expanding the idea into a full-scale production.” The show was officially built in Asia, starting in Korea, where it grew into a complete theatrical experience.

Melody and her brother were part of it from the beginning. “From the age of five, we were already performing,” she says. “The show became a true family creation — every generation contributing to its growth.” When the opportunity came to bring the Gazillion Bubble Show to New York Off-Broadway, it was meant to run for just two weeks. Nearly 20 years later, it’s still here.

So why does it connect so deeply with families?

Every time we see bubbles, it takes us back to being a kid and the first time we ever saw one and felt that sense of wonder,” Melody says. “For children, everything is already new, and bubbles meet them right in that moment.” But what really moved her was seeing parents feel it too. “Bubbles pull everyone into the present, and that shared moment of wonder is what makes the show connect so deeply with families.”

Unlike many stage performances, this isn’t passive entertainment. “It’s not something you just sit and watch, it’s something you get to feel part of,” she explains. The show blends science, art, storytelling, lights, music, and interactive moments. “Bubbles are universal and timeless, so everyone connects instantly. It’s less about spectacle and more about being fully present together as a family, sharing joy in real time.”

First-time audiences can expect what Melody calls “PURE wonder.” Giant bubbles. Square bubbles. Spinning bubbles. Bubbles filled with fog and color. Bubbles that surround the entire venue. “The show runs in segments,” she says. “It starts with bubble artistry — complex tricks and forms of art created with bubbles. Then there are interactive moments with kids volunteering. We even share how bubbles exist in our daily lives.” At one point, an entire family is invited on stage and the space fills with bubbles everywhere. And the grand finale? “We created a bubble laser performance — pretty much like a bubble rave for families that makes you feel like you’re inside a bubble blizzard.”

Behind the scenes, it’s still deeply personal. “The show is truly run by my family,” Melody says. “We’re constantly mixing bubble solutions, testing new ideas, experimenting to see what creates the most wow effects.” Her own children are involved too. “I’ll have my kids be part of the crew and even help with cleanup afterward. It’s not just a performance for me — it’s something we built to evolve and grow together as a family.”

And sometimes, the impact reaches far beyond applause.

There was a moment I’ll never forget,” Melody shares. While performing in Sydney, she brought a little girl on stage. After the show, the grandparents told her the child’s mother was battling cancer and they hadn’t seen her smile like that in a long time. “They said the show gave her a moment of happiness during a really hard time. These kinds of moments stick with me. You never know whether it’s an adult or child going through a hard time, and moments like that remind me that what we do can truly make someone’s day.”

Over the years, the show has continued to evolve. “We’ve added new bubble techniques, lighting, music, and more storytelling,” Melody explains. “We’re constantly experimenting and refining what creates the most wonder on stage.” What keeps it fresh? “We’re always creating, testing new ideas, responding to the audience, and letting the show evolve naturally while staying true to the magic that made it special in the first place.”

Her hope for families is simple but powerful: “I hope they leave feeling more connected to each other. For kids to have a sense of wonder and imagination. For parents, a reminder to slow down and be present. I hope families walk out having shared a moment together that they’ll always remember.”

In a fast-paced city full of entertainment options, the Gazillion Bubble Show offers something refreshingly simple - shared joy, floating right in front of you.
